Let’s Talk Turkey

Each Thanksgiving we get together with our families and friends to give thanks and feast on our favorite traditional foods. Here in the south one of our many traditions is instead of roasting our turkey in an oven we use a deep fryer. This is a mighty tasty treat but it can also be a dangerous one.

Here is some advice given by the UL safety experts to keep your family safe should you choose to fry your turkey.

1. Be sure your fryer has a UL rating.
2. Always use your fryer outdoors.
3. Place your fryer on a flat surface to keep it from tipping over.
4. Partially frozen turkeys can cause a spillover effect. Be sure your turkey is properly thawed.
5. Never leave your fryer unattended. Keep children and pets away from a hot fryer to keep them safe.
6. Do not overfill the fryer.
7. Keep a fire extinguisher close when using your fryer. DO NOT use water on a grease fire.

A few other things to keep in mind when using a turkey fryer, without a thermostat control, these fryers can overheat and become combustible. Use heat protection when touching the lid, sides and pot handles. This is true even hours after the cooking is finished as the oil holds the heat.

I hope you and your family have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.

Be ready, be prepared and be safe.
